Frequently Asked Questions

Patrons
Q: What does "STRIPES" stand for?
A: STRIPES stands for Supportive Tigers Riding In Pursuit of Ensuring Safety.

Q: Why does my ride sometimes take a long time?
A: STRIPES generally has 6 cars running on weekend nights. At some of the busier times of the night, such as closing time, STRIPES may have 5 or 6 rides backed up per car. The best way to get a ride is the plan ahead and call in early, or better yet, volunteer!

Q: Where do you pick up/drop off at?
A: STRIPES will pick up MU students anywhere within Columbia city limits. STRIPES will NOT drop you off at a party or bar. Please do not abuse the service as it takes away from patrons who may actually need safe rides home.

Q: Do you guys get paid?
A: No, STRIPES is 100% student-volunteer ran.

Q: I called for a ride but found another safe ride home - how do I cancel my ride?
A: We're glad you found a ride! We'd appreciate if you could call back into our main number (573-442-9672) and let us know you found a ride so we can quickly move on to other students that are waiting for rides.

Q: I think I left something in the STRIPES car - what do I do?
A: STRIPES cars are searched at the end of each night. If you suspect you lost something the same night you received a ride, call our main number and we will have our volunteers search the car. If you realize the next day you may have lost something, email us and we'll get back to you ASAP. After the weekend is over, all of the lost and found items can be picked up in our office in AO22 Brady Commons.

Q: Can my friends from out of town get a ride too?
A: Absolutely! As long as one of the patrons getting a ride has a MU student ID, we will give your group of friends a ride.

Q: What are the STRIPES Rights?
A: The STRIPES rights are a list of rules we read to each passenger once they are picked up and before the ride beings. These rules exist for the safety of our volunteers and patrons. They are as follows;

STRIPES reserves the right to terminate this ride at any time. You may not use tobacco or possess alcohol or drugs in the vehicle. We reserve the right to notify the police or hospital if necessary. Date rape drug test kits are available upon request. STRIPES agrees to drive you to (YOUR HOME). Do you agree to these terms? May I please see one person's MU Student ID?

Volunteers
Q: Do I have to be 21 years old to volunteer for STRIPES?
A: No, but you must be 21 to drive one of the STRIPES rental vehicles. There is no age restriction on working the phones, being a passenger, or being a Larry.

Q: Do I have to use my own car if I want to volunteer for STRIPES?
A: No, STRIPES rents vehicles each weekend from Enterprise Rent-a-Car and we use these for the safe ride service.

Q: How do I get trained to be a STRIPES volunteer??
A: We do complete driver, passenger, and phoner training on a nightly basis. We also do introductions every night, so don’t worry if you aren’t sure who anyone else is!

Q: I am planning on volunteering for STRIPES this weekend, what do I need to do?
A: First, we ask that you go to our home page and go to Sign Up to Volunteer. Use the following pages to sign yourself (and any of your friends!) for the day that you would like to volunteer. Secondly, when that evening rolls around, arrive at the STRIPES house by 9:30pm so we can promptly start operations at 10:00pm. Lastly, prepare for a night of great conversations and fun stories!

Q: Where is the STRIPES house located? -OR- I do not have a ride to the STRIPES house, can I still volunteer?
A: On any STRIPES night when you would like to volunteer, you are more than welcome to call the STRIPES number (573-442-9672) anytime after 9:00pm. We can provide directions to the STRIPES House or, if you do not have your own transportation, we can come and pick you up before the STRIPES night begins.

Q: I am not currently a volunteer of STRIPES but I want to come in for an evening, can I do that?
A: STRIPES welcomes new MU student volunteers throughout the semester and we love to have new faces join the STRIPES crew. For more information, refer to the following questions and if you have any further questions feel free to email us.

Q: How can I become more involved with STRIPES
A: STRIPES differentiates between three types of volunteers in the organization; regular volunteers, members, and executives. Regular volunteers are held to no obligation on the number of nights they volunteer. Members of STRIPES are required to volunteer 5 nights each semester and are welcome to STRIPES events and other perks. Executives are Members of STRIPES who have volunteered at least one semester and have been sought after for their strong devotion to STRIPES. The Executives are responsible for running STRIPES each semester, both during the evenings and the weekdays in between. To become a member of STRIPES, please fill out an application.

Q: I've only been in Columbia for a short time and I am not familiar with the streets, can I still volunteer?
A: Absolutely, Drivers and Passengers always leave in pairs. These pairs are chosen each night to match our new or inexperienced volunteers with experienced partners. In addition, each vehicle is equipped with GPS navigation to help those who may be less familiar with Columbia's streets.

Q: A friend and I both want to volunteer STRIPES; can we be in a car together?
A: This is a possibility, however STRIPES requires that one male and one female STRIPES volunteer must be in the car. There are no exceptions to this rule because we value the safety of our volunteers and our patrons. A male/female pair best ensures everyone's safety.

Q: I want to do community service for STRIPES. Can I get hours by volunteering for STRIPES?
A: STRIPES does offer hours for community service in certain cases. For all the details on RECEIVING hours, please email us BEFORE you volunteer. STRIPES is NOT obligated to award community service hours for nights volunteered unless the hours are approved ahead of time.

Q: Do Columbia and MU police officers target STRIPES vehicles to give tickets to students?
A: NO NO NO! STRIPES and our community's law enforcement work together so STRIPES can continue to provide safe rides home for MU students and help keep Columbia's roads safe.

Q: I heard STRIPES accepts tips, do I get to keep the tips if I'm a driver or a passenger?
A: No, STRIPES is a volunteer run organization and all tips collected go towards the operation of STRIPES. This money is used to pay for operational expenses such as gasoline.
